GhostBed 3D Matrix Firmness And Feel
Let’s break down how firm the GhostBed 3D Matrix is and how it will feel to average weight, heavyweight, and lightweight sleepers:
How Firm Is The GhostBed 3D Matrix?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix feels like a 6/10, just a bit softer-than-average. It has a particularly thick comfort layer that provides the top of the mattress with some real softness. We have to push pretty far into the mattress before we hit the firmer support layers.
As with most mattresses, the GhostBed 3D Matrix might feel firmer or softer depending on someone’s size and weight. Lightweight sleepers might think the mattress is particularly soft but larger people might press in further and feel more firmness.
Sleeping On The GhostBed 3D Matrix
Starting off back sleeping on the GhostBed 3D Matrix, it really is providing that perfect balance of comfort and support. Our hips sink into the top comfort layers, but those denser proprietary foams keep them from sinking in too far. See our best mattresses for back sleepers to find more like the GhostBed 3D Matrix.
Side sleeping, the pressure relief is pretty excellent on the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress. The comfort layer is thick on this mattress so we sink in a bit and feel very little pressure on our shoulders and hips.
Stomach sleeping, the GhostBed 3D Matrix is too soft for us. We can feel our hips sinking too far into the mattress, and we need something firmer and more supportive. When stomach sleepers don’t get enough support they could develop lower back pain, and this is no fun!
What Does The GhostBed 3D Matrix Feel Like?
The GhostBed 3D Matrix has a responsive, balanced foam feel. There is just a bit of that slow-moving feel near the top but, overall, the mattress is bouncier and doesn’t let us sink in too far. It is very easy to move around on the mattress without feeling stuck.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
The majority of average weight back sleepers and side sleepers should both feel comfortable and supported when they are on the GhostBed 3D Matrix. However, if they are closer to 230 lbs, they could feel some more pressure on their shoulders and hips while side sleeping.
Stomach sleeping, the mattress will probably be too soft for people in this weight range. It is possible that those who are very close to 130 lbs could get enough support, however.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
A good number of heavyweight back sleepers should get enough support when they are on the GhostBed 3D Matrix. However, if they are well over 230 lbs and closer to 300 lbs, they could need a more supportive mattress.
Side sleeping, heavyweight people are going to feel some pressure on their shoulders and hips. The heavier they are, the more pressure they could feel in those areas. Those who are closer to 230 lbs could get enough pressure relief from the GhostBed 3D Matrix, however.
Stomach sleeping, the mattress will most likely be too soft for heavyweight people. They will want to look for something firmer and able to handle their heavier center mass.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight sleepers should find the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress to be a good fit for back, side, and stomach sleeping. It still might be a bit too soft for some lightweight stomach sleepers. They could want something with a thinner comfort layer that is firmer overall.

GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Construction
Now, let’s open up the GhostBed 3D Matrix and see exactly what is going on inside. We’ll look at each layer of the mattress and discuss exactly what it does for the whole GhostBed experience.
Cover
The GhostBed 3D Matrix features a Ghost Ice Cooling Cover. As the name suggests, it is cool to the touch and is designed to dissipate heat from the top of the mattress.
Comfort Layers
The top layer of the GhostBed 3D Matrix is gel memory foam that is soft and pressure-relieving. On top of this layer, there is a thin layer of GhostBed’s proprietary 3D Matrix Polymer that makes the top of the mattress feel quite cool. It will also keep sleepers from sinking too far into the mattress.
Below that, there is a layer of Ghost Bounce, a proprietary foam from GhostBed. It offers some more contouring but is also bouncy and makes it easier to move around on the mattress. This layer rests on a foam transition layer that adds even more pressure relief and soft comfort to the top of the mattress.
Support Layers
Individually-wrapped coils are the main support system in the GhostBed 3D Matrix. They are reinforced toward the edge of the mattress to provide more edge support. The coils rest on a layer of high-density foam.
Mattress Height
The GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress is 13″ tall. This is a good thickness for a hybrid mattress like this.

GhostBed 3D Matrix Mattress Performance
We put the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress to the test to see how it performed with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and edge support. Let’s see how it did!
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
Cooling is one of the highlights of the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress. The cover is indeed to cool to the touch and the proprietary p0lymer makes the top of the mattress even cooler! Add in coils that promote airflow, and we’ve got a breathable, cooling mattress! Check out our best cooling mattresses for more like the GhostBed 3D Matrix!
Motion Transfer
While the GhostBed 3D Matrix does feature memory foam in its construction, it is more of a bouncy, responsive mattress overall. Bouncier mattresses aren’t always the best at cutting down on motion transfer. It’s surprising that the GhostBed isolated motion quite well.
Edge Support
Sitting near the edge of the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress, it does collapse quite a bit. We don’t feel held up by the coils in this position. However, when we lie down near the edge of the mattress, it doesn’t buckle under our weight. We feel secure lying close to the edge of the 3D Matrix.
Durability
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is a luxury mattress that features some very high-end materials. Just looking at the coils and the high-density foams, we see the mattress lasting for at least seven years.
Off-gassing
The GhostBed 3D Matrix is a bed in a box mattress so, yes, there is indeed some off-gassing. This slight smell is totally normal for an online mattress, and it did dissipate after 48 hours.
Noise
While the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress does feature coils, we aren’t hearing any squeaking or creaking when we move around. These coils might start to make more noise after many years of use, however.
Sex
Those who need the best mattress for sex usually want to find something that is bouncier and more responsive. The GhostBed 3D Matrix is indeed responsive and should make it easy for sexual partners to move around and change positions.
Warranty Info
The GhostBed 3D Matrix comes with a 101-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.
How Does The GhostBed 3D Matrix Compare To Other Mattresses?
Now, let’s see how the GhostBed stacks up against the original GhostBed mattress and Purple mattress.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Vs GhostBed
The original GhostBed mattress and the GhostBed 3D Matrix are quite different with regard to their construction. The GhostBed mattress is an all-foam mattress that features latex foam over memory foam over a base layer. The GhostBed 3D Matrix is a hybrid mattress that features multiple layers of proprietary foam in its comfort layer.
The GhostBed is also firmer than the GhostBed 3D Matrix and has a slightly different feel. They are both bouncy, responsive mattresses, but the GhostBed 3D Matrix will allow sleepers to sink in more. The GhostBed is also less than half the price of the GhostBed 3D Matrix.
The GhostBed is going to be a better fit for stomach sleepers and those who want the best mattress for the money. The GhostBed 3D Matrix will work better for side sleepers, larger people, and those who want a more advanced mattress.
GhostBed 3D Matrix Vs Purple
The Purple is one of the most popular mattresses on the bed in a box market. It features something called hyper-elastic gel polymer in its comfort layer. This forms a gel grid that is both firm and pressure-relieving at the same time. The GhostBed 3D Matrix features multiple foam layers over supportive coils.
We found the Purple to be a bit firmer than the GhostBed 3D Matrix mattress. However, it might feel softer to larger people who are able to activate its firmer gel grid. The Purple has a squishy gel-like feel that is very unique. The GhostBed 3D Matrix has more of a balanced foam feel. Both mattresses are very responsive and make it easy to move around at night.
The Purple is also less than half the price of the GhostBed 3D Matrix, so it will be a better fit for those who want to save money. It will also be a good fit for larger people and those who want an even more breathable mattress. The GhostBed 3D Matrix should be a better choice for side sleepers and those who prefer the recognizable feel of a foam mattress.
