Saatva Modern Foam Mattress Overview
Many companies compress their mattresses and roll them into boxes, but not Saatva. This company delivers beds straight to your doorstep, ready to rest on. That means you don’t need to unbox the mattress or wait for it to off-gas and expand.
Because it’s never been compressed, the Saatva Modern Foam is especially durable and high-quality. That said, it will work better for some people more than others. Here’s a quick overview of who may want get this new mattress.
Who Might Like The Saatva Modern Foam?
- Back and side sleepers
- People who like beds with plush pillow tops
- Shoppers looking for a mattress made with hypoallergenic materials
Who Might Not Like The Saatva Modern Foam?
- Stomach sleepers
- Fans of mattresses with a slow-moving memory foam feel
- People on a tight budget
Saatva Modern Foam Mattress Firmness and Feel
Before we explain what this mattress is made out of, let’s examine its firmness and feel. That way, you can easily figure out whether it will meet all of your sleep needs!
How Firm is the Saatva Modern Foam?
Mattress Clarity’s firmness scale ranges from 1 – 10, with 6.5 representing the industry standard for medium-firm mattresses.
The Saatva Modern Foam feels slightly firmer than average, coming in at 7/10. However, over time, we expect this mattress to soften slightly.
Sleeping On The Saatva Modern Foam
In my experience, the Saatva Modern foam feels great while back sleeping. The plush pillow top gently contours my lower back, and the high-density base foam creates plenty of support. When I move over to my side, I feel some fantastic pressure relief along my shoulders.
The Saatva Modern Foam isn’t the best choice for stomach sleepers, however. Even though it’s a little bit firmer than average, it doesn’t quite provide enough support for this sleeping position. If you tend to rest on your stomach, check out our list of the best firm mattresses.
What Does the Saatva Modern Foam Feel Like?
The Saatva Modern Foam mattress has a classic pillow top feel, which is a bit unusual for an all-foam mattress. With a half inch of natural latex beneath the cover, this mattress feels responsive and cool.
You won’t feel like you’re sinking inside this mattress, and it shouldn’t leave body indentations over time. And thanks to its heat-dispersing foam layers, this mattress should work well for hot sleepers.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average weight back sleepers should feel a great balance of comfort and support on the Saatva Modern Foam. Because it feels slightly firmer than average, it helps the lower back stay in a neutral alignment throughout the night.
Side sleepers should also feel quite comfortable on this mattress. The latex foam layer feels responsive and bouncy, and it provides some much-needed pressure relief.
Stomach sleepers in this weight category will probably think the mattress feels too soft. Generally, stomach sleepers need especially firm mattresses. If you primarily rest in this sleeping position, we suggest looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers should feel some nice support on the Saatva Modern Foam. People who weigh between 230 – 300lbs shouldn’t sink too deeply into the top layers, because the latex foam feels especially supportive and responsive. Folks who weigh more than 300lbs, though, might need a more supportive option. Take a look at the best mattresses for heavy people for more information.
Heavier side sleepers should feel decent pressure relief on the Saatva Modern Foam, but again, they may need something with a bit more support such as the Saatva HD mattress.
We don’t recommend the Saatva Modern Foam for heavyweight stomach sleepers. This mattress won’t provide enough support for the hips, so sleepers could develop lower back pain over time.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
No matter the sleeping position, lightweight sleepers should feel comfortable on the Saatva Modern Foam. People in this category won’t compress the top layer too much, but they should still feel plenty of pressure relief.
Even lightweight stomach sleepers should get the lumbar support they need. The latex comfort layer should help people in this weight category maintain the correct spinal alignment.
Saatva Modern Foam Mattress Construction
Like all of Saatva’s mattresses, the Modern Foam has some luxurious features. Let’s examine its construction and learn more about it.
Cover
The Saatva Modern Foam has an organic cotton cover that feels soft and breathable. Better yet, Saatva puts each mattress through their special antimicrobial treatment, which helps prevent bacteria growth.
Comfort Layers
Underneath the cover, you’ll find a .5” layer of natural latex foam. This nontoxic material creates a nice pillow top look and feel. Perhaps its most unique feature, though, is its patented lumbar zone quilting. This makes the mattress feel slightly firmer toward the center, which helps people keep their spines straight throughout the night.
Beneath the pillow top sits a 2” layer of convoluted, or egg crate-style, foam. Thanks to its open air channels, this material feels breathable and cool.
The final comfort layer is made out of cooling gel memory foam. Gel helps pull heat away from the body, and the foam gently contours the body.
Support Layer
For support, the Modern Foam mattress has a 7” layer of high-density base foam. Like its second comfort layer, this base foam has an open-celled construction. This means this mattress is a great pick for hot sleepers.
Mattress Height
The Saatva Modern Foam mattress is 11” tall.

Saatva Modern Foam Mattress Performance
Firmness, feel, and construction aren’t the only important aspects to consider. Now, let’s see how the Saatva Modern Foam performs when it comes to cooling, motion transfer, edge support, and durability.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Many all-foam mattresses tend to trap heat, but the Saatva Modern Foam doesn’t fall in this category. Made with layers of breathable foams, this bed has plenty of room for airflow. Overall, this is a great pick for hot sleepers.
Motion Transfer
Motion isolation is super important to consider, especially if you share a bed with a partner. If a bed doesn’t isolate motion well, you might wake up in the middle of the night when your partner shifts sleeping positions.
Thanks to its all-foam construction, this mattress doesn’t have a lot of motion transfer. Even sensitive sleepers should sleep soundly on this mattress.

Edge Support
When you sit or rest near the side of the Saatva Modern Foam, will you feel secure? In order to figure that out, we tested its edge support.
When sitting along the edge, the sides collapsed quite a bit. However, thanks to its high-density base layer, we didn’t feel like we would completely roll off. We had a similar experience when lying down near the side of the bed. Overall, this mattress has decent edge support.
Durability
Because the Saatva Modern foam is never compressed into a box, it’s much more durable than other all-foam mattresses. This, paired with its high-quality latex foam and dense support layer, should give the mattress a long lifespan. We expect it to last at least 10 years.
Off-Gassing
Many bed-in-a-box mattresses emit chemical odors upon opening, but that won’t be an issue at all with Saatva. These mattresses are never compressed, so you won’t notice any strong smells.
Noise
Because it doesn’t contain innersprings, the Saatva Modern Foam is totally silent.
Sex
Sexual partners typically want mattresses that are bouncy and easy to move around on. Even though the Saatva Modern foam lacks springy coils, it’s still a good choice for getting intimate. The top layer feels responsive, so it’s easy to switch positions on this bed.

How Does The Saatva Modern Foam Compare To Other Mattresses?
There are tons of memory foam mattresses out there. So how do you know which one to pick? Luckily, we’ve tested hundreds of them and can help clear up any confusion.
We’ll compare the Saatva Modern Foam to two other popular beds, Nectar and Casper. And remember, if you need even more information, you can find in-depth reviews on our Saatva Mattress comparisons page.
Saatva Vs. Nectar
Saatva and Nectar mattresses have many similarities, but they aren’t identical. Even though they both contain layers of high and low density foams, The Nectar original mattress feels slightly softer.
The Nectar mattress has more of a slow-moving memory foam feel. When you rest on it, you’ll feel your joints gently sink into the top layers. The Saatva Modern foam feels a bit more responsive.
Because the Saatva mattress has more high-end features, such as its quilted pillow top, it does cost more than the Nectar. But remember, you can always save some money with our Saatva mattress coupons.
Who Should Get The Saatva Modern Foam?

- Those who want a more luxurious mattress
- Fans of slightly firmer mattresses
Who Should Get The Nectar Mattress?
- Folks who like a slow-moving memory foam feel
- Those who want to save money
- People who like bed-in-a-box mattresses

Saatva Vs. Casper
Both mattresses work well for folks with back pain. Casper’s zoned support system helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment, and Saatva’s zoned pillow top creates a great balance of comfort and support.
These two mattresses also have the same firmness level! On our scale, these beds feel like a 7/10, which is a half point higher than the industry standard.
Both mattresses have a balanced foam feel, but the Saatva’s natural latex foam gives it more of a responsive nature. If you prefer bouncy mattresses, Saatva might be the way to go.
Unlike Saatva, Casper is a bed-in-a-box. This means you’ll need to wait about 48 hours for it to off-gas and expand. However, Casper does cost less than the Saatva Modern Foam.
Who Should Get The Saatva?
- People who prefer responsive mattresses
- Those who do not want to wait for their mattress to off-gas and expand.
Who Should Get The Casper?
- People who want a bed with a balanced foam feel
- Those who want to save some money
