Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Overview

Helix is a mattress company that is all about options. First off, you can choose from their standard line of hybrid mattresses or their Luxe line. They also offer a sleep quiz to help you match you with the Helix mattress that best suits your needs. The Luxe mattresses are the higher-end option and boast cooling covers, plush pillow tops, and advanced zoning. There are six Luxe models that range from very soft to very firm.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is right in the middle of that firmness range and offers a great balance of comfort and support. It is their most popular model and should work for many types of sleepers.

Who Should Get The Helix Midnight Luxe?

Who Might Not Like The Helix Midnight Luxe?

  • Stomach sleepers who need support under their hips
  • Heavier side sleepers
  • Those who want a more affordable mattress

Helix Midnight Luxe Firmness and Feel

As I said above, Helix offers mattresses with a variety of firmnesses. Let’s talk more about the firmness of the Helix Midnight Luxe and how that will work for different body types.

How Firm is the Helix Midnight Luxe?

The Helix Midnight Luxe has a firmness of 6.5/10, which is exactly medium-firm on our firmness scale. The plush pillow top and memory foam on top provides a good deal of comfort but, below that, the transition layers and coils provide excellent support.

The coils also feature zoning, which makes the mattress feel a bit firmer toward the center. Because of this, the Helix Midnight Luxe might feel firmer when you are back and stomach sleeping and softer when you are side sleeping.

If you like a medium-firm mattress, you can also look at the Helix Dusk Luxe.

Sleeping On The Helix Midnight Luxe

Back sleeping feels absolutely fantastic on the Helix Midnight Luxe. Even as a larger person, I am getting great support from the coils. I can really feel the extra support from the zoned lumbar area. At the same time, the plush pillow top cushions my body and makes for a very comfortable night of sleep. It is one of the best mattresses for back sleepers.

Side sleeping, I am feeling some pressure on my shoulders and hips but not too much. The top layers are very plush, so I don’t feel an extreme amount of pressure building up on my pressure points. However, if you just sleep on your side, you might want to take a look at one of Helix’s softer models such as the Helix Sunset Luxe. This will provide better pressure point relief.

A wide shot of a man sleeping on his side.

The medium-firm Helix Midnight Luxe is not firm enough for me when I am stomach sleeping. Even with its zoning, it is not providing me with enough support under my hips. Most stomach sleepers might want to opt for the Helix Dawn Luxe, one of their firmest models.

What Does The Helix Midnight Luxe Feel Like

While it contains memory foam in its construction, the Helix Midnight Luxe is a bouncier mattress overall. The transition layers and coils are very responsive and make it very easy to move around on the mattress and change positions.

Right on top, the mattress does have that pillow top feel that is plush and lets you sink in a fair bit. Also, below that, you get just a bit of that slow-moving memory foam feel. Still, while the top is quite plush, I don’t have trouble moving around on the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Average weight back sleepers should find the Helix Midnight Luxe to be a great fit. The combination of plush pillow top and coils should provide the perfect balance of comfort and support. These sleepers should also feel additional support from the zoning in the support layer.

Average weight side sleepers could get enough pressure relief on the Helix Midnight Luxe. They won’t press too far into the mattress and should mostly feel soft comfort on their shoulders and hips.

Stomach sleepers who weigh close to 130 lbs should feel well supported on the Helix Midnight Luxe. However, those who are closer to 230 lbs will probably need a firmer mattress overall. They could feel their hips dipping into this softer mattress, and this can cause back pain over time.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh less than 275 should like the Helix Midnight Luxe. Like average weight back sleepers, they will love the balance of comfort and support. However, if you weigh more than this, you should consider the Helix Plus mattress, which is made specifically for larger people.

If you are a larger side sleeper, you will probably want to take a look at one of Helix’s softer models or, if you weigh much over 275, the Helix Plus. The Helix Midnight Luxe won’t provide enough pressure relief for the majority of heavyweight side sleepers. You can also take a look at our best mattresses for heavy people.

Heavyweight stomach sleepers will want to find a firmer mattress. They will most likely feel their center mass sink into the mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Helix Midnight Luxe should be a good mattress for lightweight sleepers, no matter what position they sleep in. Back sleeping, lightweight sleepers should feel both comfortable and supported. Side sleeping, they won’t sink in so far and should mostly feel the plush pillow top and memory foam. Stomach sleeping, they should get the support they need from the zoned coils.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see exactly what is going on inside of the Helix Midnight Luxe. I’ll be talking about each layer of the mattress and what its function is.

Cover

When you buy a Helix Midnight Luxe, you have a choice of two covers. You can opt for the soft breathable cover made with Tencel fabric, or if you often find yourself sleeping hot, you can choose the GlacioTex Cooling Cover. This cover is cool to the touch and is designed to draw heat away from your body.

Comfort Layer

One of the standout features of the Helix Midnight Luxe is its plush quilted pillow top. This is the bed’s main comfort layer. The top cover is quilted with soft foam that helps create the cloudlike look and feel of the mattress.

Below that, there is a layer of Memory Plus Foam. This material has some of that slow-moving feel we’ve come to expect from memory foam mattresses and is very pressure-relieving.

These top layers rest on a layer of Gel Visco Foam. This adds more contouring and comfort while also supporting the body.

Transition Layer

A layer of high-grade polyfoam sits between the comfort and support layer. It eases you down from the soft top layers down to the firmer base layers.

Support Layer

The main support layer of the Helix Midnight Luxe is pocketed coils. These are there to hold up the body while keeping the spine neutrally aligned. They are zoned, so the center row of coils is firmer than the coils near the head and foot of the mattress. This helps provide extra support for the lower back, preventing back pain and helping even more with spinal alignment.

The coil layer rests on a layer of Duradense foam. This high-density foam helps support the coils and prevents them from digging into your box spring or bed frame.

Mattress Height

The Helix Midnight Luxe is 14” tall.

Helix Midnight Luxe Mattress Performance

I ran the Helix Midnight Luxe through a number of tests. Keep reading to see how it performed!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Helix Midnight Luxe sleeps very cool. Hybrid mattresses are usually very breathable, and the Midnight Luxe is no exception. The coils leave a lot of room for airflow, and the top layers are breathable as well. I also tried out the model with the cooling cover, and it does help keep me from overheating at night.

Motion Transfer

Motion transfer is always important for couples to think about. If your mattress cuts down on motion transfer, you and your partner can move around without disturbing one another.

The Helix Midnight Luxe features excellent motion isolation. I laid down on one side of the mattress while my coworker moved around on the other side. I did not feel those movements on my side of the mattress. This makes the Helix Midnight Luxe a great mattress for couples.

Edge Support

If you sleep with a partner, you also want to think about edge support. If your mattress has good edge support, you and your partner will be able to use the full surface area of the mattress.

The Helix Midnight Luxe has great edge support, and I feel very secure sitting near the edge of the mattress. When I lie down, I don’t feel like I am going to fall off the mattress.

This is another great perk for couples.

Durability

The Helix Midnight Luxe features some high-density foam and other high-quality materials such as individually-wrapped coils. It is hard to gauge exactly how long a mattress will last but, based on its construction, the Helix Midnight Luxe should last for at least 10 years. This will depend on your weight and how often you use the mattress, but the Helix Midnight Luxe is definitely a durable option.

Off-gassing

When I unboxed the Helix Midnight Luxe, there was a slight chemical smell. This is completely normal when unboxing bed-in-a-box mattresses, and the smell did dissipate after 48 hours. I recommend opening a window and waiting to sleep on the Helix Midnight mattress until this amount of time has passed.

Noise

The Helix Midnight Luxe does not make any noise when I move around on it. However, it is a hybrid mattress, and the coils might start to squeak after many years of use. This is something to keep in mind if you are looking at a hybrid mattress.

Sex

If you want one of the best mattresses for sex, a bouncier mattress is usually a better choice. The Helix Midnight Luxe is a responsive mattress and makes it very easy to move around. It is a very good mattress for sex.

How Does The Helix Midnight Luxe Compare To Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when you’re looking for a new mattress. I want to discuss how the Helix Midnight Luxe compares to similar mattresses.

Helix Midnight Luxe vs Helix Midnight

At first glance, the Helix Midnight Luxe and Helix Midnight have a number of similarities. They are both hybrid mattresses that feature memory foam in their comfort layer. They are also medium-firm mattresses that are both supportive and comfortable.

Helix Midnight Mattress - Construction

The main difference between the Midnight Luxe and Midnight can be found right on top. The Midnight Luxe has an added pillow top, but the Midnight only has foam layers on top. This gives the Midnight Luxe a much plusher feel and makes it feel a little softer. Also, the Luxe version comes with an optional cooling cover, and the standard Midnight only features a breathable Tencel cover.

While they both feature individually-wrapped coils, the Helix Midnight Luxe’s coils are zoned. The center of the Midnight Luxe mattress is firmer, but the standard Midnight’s is not.

The Helix Midnight Luxe has a number of extra features, and this means it does cost more. A queen size Midnight Luxe costs almost $1000 more than a standard Helix Midnight.
