Weighted Blanket Calculator

Looking to purchase a weighted blanket but feel overwhelmed by the different weight options? You’ve come to the right place! The general rule of thumb when shopping for a weighted blanket is that it should be 10% of your body weight. This weight allows you to experience deep pressure touch (DPT), which is similar to the feeling we get from hugging. DPT releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine; it also helps promote the release of melatonin, which helps us fall asleep.

However, it can be confusing deciding which weight to get when you fall between sizes. While you can add or subtract a pound or two, our weighted blanket calculator below can help you determine the best weight for your size. If you’re still unsure of which weight to select, we generally recommend skewing down (rather than rounding up) to the size that is best for your body weight (for example, if you weigh 130 lb, we recommend going with a 12 lb blanket, rather than a 15 lb blanket), especially if you have never used one before.

What is a Weighted Blanket?

A weighted blanket is a blanket that is constructed with an inner fill, which gives the blanket its weight. This inner fill can range from glass beads, to sand, to plastic pellets (though they are not as common nowadays). Some weighted blankets can be used as is, while others are designed to work as duvet inserts. The main goal of a weighted blanket is to help you feel more relaxed, and fall asleep faster.

How Heavy Should My Weighted Blanket Be?

It can be confusing to select the best weighted blanket weight for your body size, so we’ve created a chart to make it even easier.

If you’re ready to purchase, check out our favorite brands for each of the sizes listed. Note that weighted blankets only come in select sizes and not every brand carries every weight; however, each of our favorite picks are available in its respective recommended size.
