Layla and Nectar are two popular memory foam mattresses.  We have received a few emails asking us to compare between the two, so we’ve put together this article to go over the main similarities and differences to help you make a more informed decision.

Key Similarities

  • Both mattresses have memory foam in them
  • Both have a similar business model
  • Both have good trial periods / return policies

Key Differences

  • Layla is made in the USA, while Nectar is made in China
  • Nectar is typically $150 cheaper than the Layla
  • Layla uses copper-infused memory foam, while Nectar uses gel memory foam
  • Nectar is slightly thicker overall and has a thicker comfort layer
  • Layla is flippable, meaning it has two firmness levels in one (soft and firm side)
  • Nectar has slightly faster-responding foam

Layla Construction

You can see from the picture below generally what the construction of the Layla is.  The top and bottom layers are copper-infused memory foam.  The egg crate-looking layer is 1.8 lb. density poly foam that allows for air to flow through the mattress.  Then there is a 2.0 lb. density support layer as well.

Nectar Construction

The picture below shows off the different layers of the Nectar mattress.  The cover is made from tencel and cotton and is quilted with gel memory foam .  The first layer is one inch of gel memory foam and is faster-responding than most memory foam.  The next layer is 3 inches of more memory foam and then there is a high-density poly foam support layer.

Construction Differences/Notes

  • The Nectar is slightly thicker overall than the Layla and has a thicker comfort layer than both sides of the Layla.
  • The Layla uses copper-infused memory foam.  I’m not a scientist, but the copper is supposed to have certain health benefits and can help keep you cool.
  • I expect the durability of the two mattresses to be about the same.
  • Layla has two firmness levels in one.

Firmness/Feel Differences

I think the Nectar firmness is in between the firm and soft side of the Layla.  So if you want something a little on the firm or soft side, Layla might be a better choice.  If you want something in the middle of the road, perhaps Nectar will be a better fit from a firmness standpoint.  I think the Nectar foam is a little faster-responding than the Layla foam is.  The videos below will show off the general feel and firmness of the two mattresses.

Motion Transfer Differences

I think both of these mattresses do well with motion isolation.  I don’t think the difference between the two here is that big, but you can check out the videos below to see exactly how each performs.

What Should You Base Your Decision On?

  • Made in USA vs China– Some people might care that Layla is made in the USA while Nectar is made in China
  • Price Differences– While discounts do change, the Nectar is typically going to be around $150 less for a Queen than the Layla
  • Copper– Take a look at the potential benefits of copper, as that is a definite difference between the two mattresses
  • Shipping– Nectar is currently facing shipping delays
  • Firmness Level– The Nectar firmness level is in between the soft and firm side of the Layla

Overall

These are pretty similar mattress with just a few important differences.  They’re both good products, so you’ll be in good hands either way.
