Casper has been very successful with their original mattress. They have recently released two new models, the Wave, and the Essential.
The Casper Wave is a luxury version of the original mattress. The Wave has the same features as the original but has a more deluxe design. Because of this, the price point is a bit higher with the Wave.
Does this mattress give you the luxury treatment? Read on for my full review.
You Might Want To Pick The Casper Wave If:
- You Are A Combination Sleeper: This medium-firm mattress could be match for a variety of sleeping positions. The zoned support worked in that I felt nice pressure relief on my side and good support when I was on my stomach and back. If you move around to different positions while you sleep, this could be a good fit for you.
- You Are A Heavier Sleeper: The comfort layer is thicker and the mattress is thicker overall. Because of this, if you are larger, you shouldn’t have to worry about pushing through the soft layers and bottoming out. You should be properly supported, while still receiving good pressure relief.
- You Are A Hot Sleeper: The top layers of this mattress are designed to help with cooling, so you shouldn’t be sleeping hot.
You Might Not Want To Pick The Casper Wave If:
- You Want A Very Firm Or Very Soft Mattress: The Casper Wave is medium in terms of firmness so, if you want a mattress further to either end of the spectrum, it may not be the best fit for you.
- You Are Looking For A Value Mattress: The original Casper is, in my opinion, a better value considering what you get. This is a luxury mattress so, if you aren’t looking for a larger investment, the Wave may not be for you.

Construction Overview
- The mattress is 11.5” tall.
- The cover is thick, soft, and durable.
- The first layer is 1” of a proprietary foam called Flo Foam. This is a very soft material and made to relieve pressure.
- The next layer is 1.5” of Latex Foam. It is a bit firmer than the Flo Foam and is more supportive.
- Then there are 1.5” of a Visco Elastic Memory Foam. This is a fast responding memory foam.
- Next is 1.5” of a High Resiliency Foam with a Polymer Network. This transitions you to the support layer of the mattress.
- Finally, there are 5.5” of a base support foam.
- The foams in this mattress are Certi-PUR-US certified. The cover and latex are OEKO-TEX certified. This means the mattress is eco-friendly.
- The Casper Wave is made in the USA.
Construction Takeaways
- The Casper Wave is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.
- The latex foam and Flo Foam are both designed to keep you cool. They dissipate heat so you shouldn’t be sleeping hot on this mattress.
- The polymer in the mattress is part of a zoned support system. It makes the middle of the mattress firmer than the rest. Because of this, you have more support for your hips, but the shoulder area remains soft to give you nice pressure relief.
- The foam layers are fast to respond, giving you good pressure relief without you feeling “stuck” in the mattress.
How This Mattress Compares To The Original Casper Mattress
Looking first at the construction, the Wave is a few inches thicker than the original Casper. The construction of the Wave also has a more complex zoned support system as well as a few extra layers.
This means a few things. First, while I thought their firmnesses were the same, the thickness of the Wave makes it a better fit for heavier sleepers. If you are a larger person, you have less chance of bottoming out on the Wave. Also, you get more of a luxurious feel with the Wave.
Because of this, the Wave is more expensive than the original Casper. I personally liked the Wave better, but you should consider if these additions are worth the price increase.

Firmness/Feel
I thought the Wave had a firmness of 6/10, about average. However, you have to take into account that this mattress has zoned support. This means that the center of the mattress is firmer than the surrounding areas. This is designed so your hips are supported while pressure is relieved on your shoulders.
I thought this system worked quite well. When I was on my back and stomach, I felt properly supported. When I was on my side, I did feel a bit of pressure, though not too much.
In terms of feel, the Wave has a balanced foam feel with a bit of bounce. This allows you to move around on the mattress. You get good pressure relief without feeling “stuck” in the mattress.
Motion Isolation
I did two motion isolation tests on the Wave. First, I rolled around and disturbed the area around a glass. I did not see the glass move too much.
I also asked Marten to move around on the other side of the bed to mimic the movements a partner might make while I sleep. He rolled around and got in and out of bed. I barely felt these movements at all.
Because of this, I think this could be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support
Foam mattresses often collapse as you sit near the edge. This is a thicker mattress so, while the foam did collapse a bit, I didn’t feel like I was going to fall off the bed.
Likewise, as I lay down near the edge, I didn’t feel like I was going to be ejected from the bed. Overall, I would say the edge support was decent on the Wave.
You can see the edge support in the photo below.
Marten’s Take
Marten is a staff writer for us. He has a much different body type than me: He is 6’7″ and weighs about 230 lb; I am 5’9″ and 160 lb. Here is what he thought about the mattress:
Joe said it was a 6/10 in terms of firmness and I said it was a 7/10.
On my side, I felt a little bit of firmness on my shoulders and my hips. You can see some red on my pressure map.
That being said, it still was pretty comfortable.
On my stomach, I could have used a little more support. Pretty good support overall, but I did feel my hips sinking in a bit.
This mattress was best when I was on my back. There was nice support on my hips, and I felt the foam moving into my lumbar area. Overall, if you’re a back sleeper and you’re my size, I might be a good choice for you.
This is a thicker mattress with more of a comfort layer. While Marten did feel some pressure on his shoulders and hips, he didn’t bottom out on the Wave. Also, if you are a heavier stomach sleeper, it is worth noting that this is in the medium-firmness range. As I said earlier if you need a very firm mattress to give you that extra support, this may not be the best pick for you.

What Makes This Mattress Stand Out
- It could be a good mattress for combination sleepers. It has a medium-firmness and features just the right amount of pressure relief and support to fit sleepers in various positions.
- The zoned construction makes it so you have support in the right areas while still keeping the mattress suitably soft in others.
- The foam also responds quickly, so you can move around on the mattress without getting “stuck.”
- This is a luxury mattress. It has more layers than the original Casper and features a more advanced zoned support system.
Unboxing This Mattress
The Casper Wave is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it will come compressed and be shipped straight to you. You will want to begin by removing the rolled up Wave mattress from its box. Then, preferably with another person’s assistance, position the roll on your bed.
Carefully cut away the first layers of plastic until the still-compact mattress can be laid down flat. Then, pierce through the final layer of plastic and the Wave will expand. Simply clear away the excess plastic and allow your mattress to breathe and fully expand.
Overall
The Casper Wave is, in the end, a more luxury version of the original Casper mattress. The Wave is a thicker mattress and, because of this, could be a good choice for heavier sleepers. Combination sleepers and hot sleepers should also find this mattress comfortable.
Also, note that the Wave is going to cost more than the original Casper. While it does have more layers and a more advanced zoned support system, you should consider if these features are worth it to you.
The Casper Wave comes with a 100-Night Sleep Trial and a 10-Year Warranty. Financing is available as well as free shipping and returns.
