Memory foam mattresses can offer uniquely soft comfort not found on other types of mattresses. But not all memory foam mattresses are the same. If you are choosing between two all-foam mattresses such as the Lull and Puffy, you need to look beyond the memory foam to find out which will be the perfect fit.

Construction Differences/Notes
- The Puffy has a thicker layer of gel memory foam on top. Because of this, it will have more of that classic memory foam feel. You will sink into the mattress more with the Puffy and sleep more on top of the mattress with the Lull.
- The thickness of their memory foam layers also makes them better choices for different types of sleepers, respectively. The thinner memory foam layer on the Lull means it should be a better choice for back and stomach sleepers. The thick layer on the Puffy could make it a better fit for side sleepers.
- Both mattresses should be about equal in terms of durability and breathability.
Firmness/Feel Differences
In terms of firmness, I thought the Lull was a 7/10 and the Puffy was a 6.5/10. Note that heavier people might have a different experience. They may press through the foam layers more than I do and engage the firm support layers in each mattress.
Here’s how I felt while sleeping on the Lull mattress:
- While back sleeping, I feel great. My hips sink in just the right amount, and the foam conforms to the shape of my body.
- On my side, I am feeling some firmness on my shoulders and hips. I am definitely engaging the firm transition layer.
- When I am on my stomach, I feel very well supported.
This was my experience on the Puffy:
- I feel decent support when I am on my back. However, I would say I feel better support on the Lull mattress.
- I feel better when I am side sleeping on the Puffy. I sink into that soft comfort layer and feel little pressure on my shoulders and hips.
- I do need more support when I am lying on my stomach.
The Lull has a balanced foam feel with a bit of bounce. It feels more like I am sleeping on top of the mattress, and I have no trouble moving around. The Puffy has a classic memory foam feel. I sink and sleep in the mattress rather than on top. There is little bounce and it isn’t as easy to move around on this mattress.

Motion Transfer Differences
If you sleep with a partner, you should consider how well your mattress handles motion transfer. Since memory foam mattresses are often the best at isolating motion, I expected both the Lull and Puffy to perform well during my tests.
On both mattresses, I saw little disturbance. Also, when Marten moved around on the other side of each mattress, I did not feel his movements. The Lull and Puffy could be good mattresses for couples.

Edge Support Differences
Between these two mattresses, the Lull features better edge support. It is firmer, so when I am sitting near the edge of the mattress, I feel more secure. When I am lying down near the edge of the mattress, I feel less like I am going to roll off or be ejected from the mattress.

Marten’s Take
Marten is a staff writer for us. He has a much different body type from me: He is 6’7″ and weighs about 230 lb; I am 5’9″ and 160 lb. Here is what he thought about these mattresses:
In terms of firmness, I said the Lull was an 8/10 and the Puffy was a 7.5 or 8/10. The main reason that my experience was so different from Joe’s has to do with my weight.
I press through the soft upper layers on both mattresses and hit their support layers. Because of that, the mattresses feel firmer to me than they do to Joe.
On the Lull, I feel well supported when I am on my back. My hips sink in, but not too far. Also, the top layer of foam presses into my lumbar area. When I’m on my side, I do press through the mattress, and I feel some pressure on my shoulders and hips. When I’m on my stomach, I need more support. I am definitely bowing in at the hips.
On the Puffy, I feel decent support, but not as much as I feel on the Lull. When I’m on my side, I’m pressing through the mattress and feeling more firmness than I felt on the Lull. On my stomach, I also need more overall support.
Overall, both these mattresses could be a good fit for someone of Joe’s size. However, unless you are a back sleeper, heavier people might want to look elsewhere.
Being a larger person, Marten pressed deep into these mattresses. These are both all-foam, so heavier people may want to consider a hybrid or innerspring mattress. This will ensure you don’t bottom out and press into the firm support layers.
Pick Lull If …
- You are a back or stomach sleeper. Between the two mattresses, the Lull is the firmer and more supportive mattress. If you sleep on your back or stomach, your hips shouldn’t sink in too far.
- You want a firmer mattress. The Lull is definitely the firmer of the two mattresses. If you have had success with firmer-than-average mattresses, this should be the right choice.
- You prefer a balanced foam feel. If you like a foam feel, but don’t want to sink in too far, the Lull should work for you. You will sleep on top of the mattress instead of “in” it.

Pick Puffy If …
- You prefer a softer mattress. Most people will agree that the Puffy is the softer of these two mattresses. If you like a little more give in your mattress and want to sink in a bit more, the Puffy should work for you.
- You are a side sleeper. The Puffy has a thicker comfort layer, and it should relieve pressure better than the Lull does. Light- or medium-weight side sleepers should feel little pressure on their shoulders and hips.
- You like a classic memory foam feel. If you like to slowly sink into your mattress, the Puffy is the way to go. The mattress has that quicksand feel, and you should feel enveloped by the mattress. If you prefer sleeping “in” your mattress (rather that on top of it), the Puffy should be the mattress for you.
Overall
If you keep this information in mind, it should be easy to choose between the Lull and Puffy mattresses.
The Lull is most likely a better bet for back and stomach sleepers who like a balanced foam feel. Side sleepers who prefer the slow, sinking feeling of memory foam should consider the Puffy.
