For the last few years, I have been a fan of the WinkBeds mattresses. I personally reviewed the original WinkBeds mattress and enjoyed my experience. Our reviewer, Marten, tried out the WinkBeds Plus and found it to be a good, supportive fit for his heavier body.

Now, we have the WinkBeds MemoryLux. While the original WinkBeds models incorporated coils in their construction, the MemoryLux is an all-foam mattress. It contains a new type of memory foam, AirCell, which I was very excited to try out for myself.

There are three firmness options, and I received the Medium model to review.

Is the new all-foam MemoryLux another comfortable mattress from WinkBeds? Read on for my full review.

$200 Off

The WinkBeds MemoryLux is a very comfortable all-foam mattress. It should be a good match for back, side, and combo sleepers. You can get $200 off the MemoryLux mattress by clicking the link below and using code MC200 at checkout.

You Might Want To Pick The MemoryLux If …

  • You are a side sleeper. The MemoryLux features a zoned construction, which makes it so the shoulder area is softer than the center of the mattress. While lying on your side, you should feel almost no pressure on your shoulders and hips. You will slowly sink in and feel that pressure disappear.
  • You are a back sleeper. The mattress has a zoned construction, so the center of the mattress is firmer than the other areas. This means back sleepers should feel good support on their lumbar area and hips.
  • You are a combination sleeper. The MemoryLux is also a good fit for those who change position at night. The zoned construction provides more support when you are on your back and stomach. You should feel better pressure relief when you are on your side.
  • You are a hot sleeper. The MemoryLux contains a proprietary AirCell foam. It is more breathable than other types of memory foam. It shouldn’t trap heat, so you should be sleeping cooler on the MemoryLux. If you want a memory foam mattress but don’t want to overheat, check it out!

Construction Of The WinkBeds MemoryLux

You Might Not Want To Pick The MemoryLux If …

  • You are a stomach sleeper. While the MemoryLux is a good option for combination sleepers, it might be too soft for those who sleep primarily on their stomachs. If you are mainly a stomach sleeper, it is worth considering a firmer, more supportive mattress.
  • You prefer to sleep on top of your mattress. The MemoryLux features soft memory foam that allows you to sink in. If you like to sleep on top of your mattress (instead of feeling like you’re sleeping “in” it), a memory foam mattress might not be your best bet.
  • You want a bouncy, responsive sleeping surface. The MemoryLux has some of that slow-moving memory foam feel. There is very little bounce, and the mattress is not the most responsive. If you like a more responsive mattress, look at something with faster-moving polyfoam or even latex foam.

Construction Overview

  • The WinkBeds MemoryLux is 12” tall.
  • The top cover is made of Tencel fabric and is quilted with 2” of gel memory foam.
  • The next layer is 3” of AirCell foam.
  • Then, there are 3” of a Zoned Progression Foam.
  • The base layer is 4” of an Atlas Core Foam.
  • The MemoryLux is made in the USA.

Construction Takeaways

  • There are three firmness options for the WinkBeds MemoryLux. You can choose from Soft, Medium, or Firm.
  • The Tencel fabric in the cover is moisture-wicking. This should help keep the top of the mattress cool.
  • The AirCell memory foam is a new type of memory foam. It features air capsules that make the AirCell more breathable than standard memory foam. So it shouldn’t trap heat the way other memory foams might.
  • The AirCell has that memory foam feel, but it is also responsive. You will sink into the mattress, but you shouldn’t have trouble moving around.
  • The layer of Progression Foam is zoned. This means the mattress is firmer toward the center and softer near the head and foot. This zoning is meant to provide more support when you are stomach and back sleeping and more comfort when you are on your side.
  • The MemoryLux is constructed so that it should be a good fit for combination sleepers. The firmer center zone will provide lumbar and hip support for back and stomach sleepers. The softer zones will relieve pressure on the shoulder area.

How Does The MemoryLux Compare To Other Memory Foam Mattresses?

If you are taking a look at the MemoryLux mattress, you might be wondering how it compares to other memory foam mattresses on the market. Basically, why would you want to pick the MemoryLux over another memory foam mattress? What sets it apart?

I thought the MemoryLux stands out for two reasons.

First off, it features a zoned construction. You don’t find this in a good deal of memory foam mattresses. As I mentioned above, the transition layer in the MemoryLux is zoned so it is firmer toward the center of the mattress and gets progressively softer as you move out toward the head and foot of the mattress.

This makes the MemoryLux a better choice for combination sleepers. The mattress will feel more supportive when you are on your back and stomach. When you are on your side, the mattress should feel softer under your shoulders and hips. If you change positions at night, the MemoryLux should work for you.

Second, the MemoryLux should sleep cooler than many memory foam mattresses. It contains AirCell foam, which is more breathable than standard memory foam. It shouldn’t trap heat the way memory foam is known to do.

Firmness And Feel

For me, the MemoryLux felt close to a 6.5/10 in terms of firmness. The top layers are very soft and easy to press into. However, once you push deeper, you will hit the firm support layers beneath. This makes the mattress feel medium-firm. This makes sense given that I reviewed the Medium model.

I will note that the MemoryLux if zoned. This means the mattress might feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position.

WinkBeds MemoryLux Firmness Scale

Here is how I feel in different sleeping positions:

  • When I am back sleeping, the MemoryLux is properly supportive. The center of the mattress is firmer, so I am feeling enough support on my lumbar area and hips. At the same time, my hips do sink into the top memory foam layers.
  • While side sleeping, I also find the MemoryLux to be a good match. The mattress is softer under my shoulders and a bit softer under my hips. I will say the mattress feels firm at first, but that memory foam gets to work and I sink in and feel good pressure relief.
  • Even with the zoning, the MemoryLux is not supportive enough for me. I think stomach sleepers of most sizes are going to want to find a firmer mattress.

The MemoryLux has a bit of that slow-moving memory foam feel. While lying on the MemoryLux, you will slowly sink into the mattress. There is also a small amount of bounce.

Motion Transfer

For those of you who share your bed with someone, it is worth thinking about motion transfer. If your mattress does not handle motion transfer well, you are and your partner could disturb one another when you move around at night.

Memory foam is one of the best materials when it comes to dealing with motion transfer. Since the MemoryLux contains multiple layers of memory foam, I expected it to perform well.

In order to test the motion isolation capabilities of the MemoryLux, I placed a glass of water on top of the mattress. When I pushed into the other side of the mattress, I did not see much disturbance in the water. Also, I laid on the mattress while Marten climbed in and out of bed on the other side of the mattress. I feel like the MemoryLux stopped that motion from transferring to my side of the mattress.

All in all, the MemoryLux should be a great mattress for couples.

Edge Support

If you do want a mattress for couples, you also want to think about edge support. This is a measure of how well your mattress supports you when you are sitting or lying down near the edge.

While sitting down near the edge of the MemoryLux, the mattress does collapse. The mattress has no coils and features soft memory foam, so this is not surprising. Also, when I lie down near the edge of the MemoryLux, I feel like I might roll off the mattress.

Overall, the MemoryLux does not have the best edge support.

Marten’s Take

If you are in the market for a new mattress, you should keep your weight in mind. If you are a larger person, you will most likely need a thicker, more supportive mattress. If you are lighter, you might not need quite so much support.

I am 5’9″ and 160 lb. To give you the perspective of a larger sleeper, we asked Marten to try out the WinkBeds MemoryLux mattress. He is 6’7″ and 230 lb. Here is what he thought about the MemoryLux:

I personally reviewed the WinkBeds Plus, a mattress made just for larger people. I was a big fan of the Plus, and I was interested to see how the MemoryLux would perform.

I thought the MemoryLux was close to a 7/10 in terms of firmness. Being a larger person, I do press into the mattress more than Joe did. So I hit those firmer layers.

Again, as Joe mentioned, this mattress might feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position. When you’re on your back, the mattress will feel firmer under your hips and lumbar area. When you are on your side, it will feel softer under your shoulders. While stomach sleeping, the mattress will feel more supportive under the center part of your body.

Here is how I feel while sleeping in different positions:

  • Back sleeping, the MemoryLux is a good match for me. The center zone does support my lumbar area while still allowing my hips to sink in.
  • When I move to my side, the MemoryLux is a decent fit for me. I feel just a bit of pressure under my shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach sleeping, the Memory Lux is too soft for me. I am a heavier person, and I definitely need more support under my hips.

If you are a heavier back or side sleeper, this could be a good match for you. Heavier stomach sleepers should look for a more supportive mattress.

With it’s zoned construction, the MemoryLux was a good match for a person of Marten’s size. I will say that those who are even larger than Marten (say in the 300 to 500 lb weight range) should look for a mattress with coils.

Unboxing The MemoryLux

Similar to most bed-in-a-box mattresses, the MemoryLux will arrive at your house or apartment in a cardboard box. You will begin by removing the rolled-up mattress from this box.

With someone’s help, place the mattress on your bed frame of foundation. Then, carefully begin to cut through the multiple plastic layers. Once you get through the last layer, the mattress will start to expand somewhat.

Clear away all the plastic and packing materials. It may take a few days for you MemoryLux to fully expand. Leave the mattress in a ventilated room to give it space and time to off-gas.

What Makes The MemoryLux Stand Out?

  • It features a zoned construction that varies the firmness of the mattress.
  • Side sleepers should get great pressure relief on the MemoryLux.
  • Back sleepers and combination sleepers will find the mix of comfort and support they need.
  • The MemoryLux should be a cooler-sleeping mattress than most memory foam options.

Overall

The WinkBeds MemoryLux should be a great choice for back sleepers, side sleepers, and combination sleepers. However, stomach sleepers and those who don’t like to sink into their mattress should look elsewhere.

The MemoryLux comes with a Forever Warranty, 120-night sleep trial, and free shipping and returns. Financing is also available.

You can choose from three firmness options for the MemoryLux. WinkBeds also offers other mattress models.
