HoMedics is known for its wide range of audio devices, including different white noise machines and sound machines. We’ve already reviewed their versatile SoundSpa, but their Deep Sleep white noise machine is for those who love white noise – but are looking for a very particular sound.

White noise is a great way to mask unwanted or disruptive noise. Whether it be a busy street outside your window or a noisy snoring partner, white noise machines – including the Deep Sleep machine – might be just the thing you need.

Is this one right for you? Watch my video review or check out the full written review with photos below. Always let me know if you have questions or want a personal recommendation on a sound machine (comment below!).

My Experience

The HoMedics Deep Sleep sound machine is geared towards those who specifically want white noise to help them sleep (or stay asleep) and those who are particular about the distinct tone. It offers four different white noise options: Soothe, Mask, Relax and Calm.

Here is how HoMedics describes each type:

  • “Soothe” is like a gentle rain and the lightest pitched tone that gently eases your mind
  • “Mask” is designed to mask external distractions including noisy neighbors and highway traffic
  • “Relax” is modulated to disrupt interfering room noise, such as a snoring partner
  • “Calm” is the deepest of all the tone settings, which is perfect for tinnitus sufferers and small children

You can switch between the tones by using the button in between the listed tones. You’ll know which one of the four is playing because a small blue light will illuminate the name of the selected tone.

Once you’ve picked the white noise version you like, you can adjust the tone (the pitch that is emphasized most) by clicking the plus or minus signs next to the “Tone” label on the machine.

There is also an auto-timer that lets you play the white noise for 30, 60 or 90 minutes before turning off. If you’d like the machine to run all night, that’s an option as well (just don’t click on the auto-timer).

All in all, the interface is very simple to use, but there are several areas of blue light that do become visible in the dark. Some people have reported that this can be distracting, and I did have to place something over it to block the light and keep it from bothering me.

Based on other reviews I’ve read on the product, it seems that the quality can be hit or miss with this product. Many start out loving it but find that either the buttons will stop working or the sound quality will start to lessen over time.

I do really like how lightweight and portable it is. This is an easy white noise machine to take with you on business trips or to put in your child’s room if you’re in a new place (or even in your own home). It works on batteries if you don’t have access to an outlet – however, they can drain pretty quick.Deep Sleep white noise machine is portable and takes batteries

A Note On Volume

If you’re planning to use the HoMedics Deep Sleep white noise machine, or any other type of sound machine overnight in your room or a family member’s room, you should be aware of the volume level.

The World Health Organization recommends that anyone planning to use a sound machine for more than 8 hours should do so at a volume of fewer than 85 decibels. Louder than that and you may be putting your hearing at risk. Parents who put a sound machine in their children’s rooms should speak with a pediatrician about an appropriate volume level.

HoMedics Deep Sleep Sound Machine can be used with a decibel reader to assess the volume

The HoMedics Deep Sleep does not have a decibel meter on the machine, but you can easily use a free app on your smartphone to find the decibel level – there are many free options to choose from.

Final Thoughts

The HoMedics Deep Sleep white noise machine can be a good option for those who want a portable and easy to use white noise machine but are pretty particular about the tone and pitch of your white noise. There are four distinct options to choose from and lots of combinations! The overall quality of the sound and the device may not be the highest, but the price isn’t astronomical, either.
