Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 and, since then, it has become one of the most successful producers of bed-in-a-box mattresses. Starting with the original Tuft & Needle and expanding include the Mint and Hybrid mattresses, the company has been carefully staying ahead of market trends.

One such trend is the hybrid mattress. Over the past few months, many popular mattress brands have begun producing hybrid versions of their flagship models. The Casper Hybrid is just one example.

So, let’s see how the Tuft & Needle Hybrid stacks up against not only other hybrids but the other Tuft & Needle mattresses as well.

Tuft & Needle Hybrid Deals

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is a mattress with a great balance of comfort and support. It should be a fantastic match for back sleepers, side sleepers, and combo sleepers

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid Might Work For…

  • Those who want a mattress that is close to medium-firm. Combining all the layers of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, the mattress is just a bit softer-than-average. Sleepers who want a mattress toward the middle of the firmness spectrum should like what they find with the Hybrid.
  • Side sleepers. The Tuft & Needle Hybrid’s comfort layer is quite thick and contains both memory foam and Adaptive Foam. Both of these materials offer significant pressure relief, so the majority of side sleepers should feel very comfortable while sleeping on the Hybrid.
  • Back sleepers. People who sleep on their backs are usually going to fare better on a mattress with a balance of comfort and support. Well, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid has that in spades. It features the support of pocketed coils and the comfort of multiple layers of foam. Back sleepers should feel good overall support while the foam conforms to the curves of their bodies.
  • Combination sleepers. This balance of comfort and support also makes the Tuft & Needle ideal for those who switch positions at night. Again, the coils provide the necessary support, and the foam layers provide comfort.
  • Hot sleepers. Foam mattresses can often trap heat, making for a hot, uncomfortable night’s sleep. However, the Tuft & Needle Hybrid features both graphite and gel bed infusions which will help draw heat away from sleepers. At the same time, the pocketed coils allow for air to flow through the Hybrid.

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid Might Not Work For…

  • Stomach sleepers. While the pocketed coils are very supportive, the top layers are just too soft to support most stomach sleepers. Those who sleep on their stomachs should seek out a firmer, more supportive mattress.
  • Those who want an extremely firm or extremely soft mattress. As noted above, the Tuft & Needle is near the center of the firmness range. Therefore, it is not the best match for those who prefer something very soft or very firm.
  • Fans of pure memory foam or those who prefer a bouncy mattress. The Tuft & Needle features a particularly balanced feel. It has some of that memory foam feel, but it is also quite responsive. Sleepers who want something very soft and slow-moving should look at a memory foam mattress, and sleepers who like something bouncy should consider a latex mattress.

Construction Overview

  • The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is 12” tall.
  • The Tuft & Needle Hybrid’s cover is soft and has a bit of that sweatshirt quality. It is quilted with a thin layer of memory foam.
  • The top comfort layer is 2” thick made of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam. The foam contains graphite and gel beads.
  • Below the top layer, there is a very thin layer of microcoils.
  • Then there is a foam transition layer.
  • The support layer contains 6” of pocketed coils.
  • This all rests on a 1” layer of base polyfoam.

Construction Takeaways

  • As mentioned above, the cover of the Tuft & Needle contains a thin layer of memory foam. That gives the top of the mattress some of that slow-moving memory foam feel.
  • The Adaptive Foam is really what sets Tuft & Needle mattresses apart. Adaptive Foam is found in all of the Tuft & Needle mattresses and combines memory foam and latex qualities. It is soft and allows sleepers to sink into the mattress, but it is also responsive and makes it easy to move around.
  • The graphite and gel beads are intended to assist with heat dissipation. Foam mattresses have a history of sleeping hot, but that should not be a problem with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. The graphite and gel beads can help draw heat away from sleepers, allowing them to sleep more coolly.
  • The multiple sets of coils also promote airflow through the mattress. This will also keep the Hybrid from trapping too much heat and should make for a cooler night of sleep.
  • The placement of the microcoils is very interesting. It is rare to see microcoils placed between two foam layers. However, that is what we find with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. Lying on the Hybrid, these microcoils seem to be adding some more contouring to the top of the mattress.
  • The Hybrid’s pocketed coils should be very supportive and should be able to hold up even larger weights.
  • The combination of soft Adaptive Foam and supportive pocketed coils provides the mattress with a balance of comfort and support.

How The Hybrid Compares To The Other Tuft & Needle Mattresses

Tuft & Needle offers three mattresses: the Original, the Mint, and now the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. So, what sets the Hybrid apart from the other Tuft & Needle mattresses?

The main design difference is going to be the microcoils and pocketed coils. The Original and the Mint are both all-foam mattresses, but the Hybrid contains coils in its support layer instead of foam.

The addition of coils makes the Hybrid a more supportive mattress than the others, and it could be a more fitting mattress for large sleepers. It is also a thicker mattress, something that larger sleepers should be on the lookout for.

The Hybrid is also a better mattress for back sleepers. As I mentioned above, the pocketed coils and Adaptive Foam give the mattress a near-perfect balance of comfort and support.

Simply put, the Hybrid is just a nicer, higher-end mattress than the Original and the Mint. They are very nice in their own right, but the Hybrid just has more to offer. However, along with its more complex construction comes a higher price tag.

Those who are considering a Tuft & Needle mattress should gauge whether they need the extra support of the Hybrid mattress. If not, the Original or Mint have a similar firmness and feel and should still be a smart, budget-friendly decision.

Firmness And Feel

So, how does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid actually feel? First off, just speaking of firmness, the Hybrid feels close to a 6/10, just slightly softer-than-average. When I press my hand into the top of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, I am feeling some soft layers at first, but then my hand hits the firmer layers beneath.

The memory foam, Adaptive foam, microcoils, and pocketed coils combine to give the Hybrid a balance of comfort and support. This makes the Tuft & Needle feel absolutely fantastic when I am sleeping on my back. The supportive coils are providing excellent overall support, while the memory foam and Adaptive Foam are adding some contouring as well.

The comfort layer is also particularly thick so that, when I move to my side, I feel no real noticeable pressure on my shoulders and hips. The top of the Hybrid is quite plush, and I believe most side sleepers are going to feel similarly.

However, stomach sleepers of pretty much any size are going to want a firmer mattress. The Hybrid is just not supportive enough for me when I am on my stomach, and I need something a bit more supportive.

Now, when it comes to feel, the Hybrid is all about balance. The mattress has a bit of that memory foam feel but not too much. It also has a bit of bounce, but not too much. So, I feel like I am sleeping on top of the mattress, but I am also sinking in just a little bit.

All told, the mattress is right down the middle in terms of both firmness and feel.

Motion Transfer

For those couples out there, motion transfer should be a major consideration. On a mattress with a lot of motion transfer, partners could wake each other up but, on mattresses with little motion transfer, this won’t be so much of an issue.

Memory foam mattresses are some of the best at handling motion transfer because this material absorbs motion and helps isolate motion to each side of the mattress.

Since the Tuft & Needle Hybrid features memory foam on top, I was interested to see how it would perform. I first placed a glass of water on one side of the Hybrid, and then I pressed into the other side. The glass of water was not disturbed too much.

Next, I lay down on one side of the mattress while Marten moved around on the other side, making the movements a partner might make in the middle of the night. I really didn’t feel his motion transfer to my side of the mattress.

This lets me know that the Tuft & Needle Hybrid should be a good mattress for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support should also come into play when couples are buying a mattress. Edge support is basically a measure of how stable the edge of a mattress is. Sitting or lying down near the edge of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, will sleepers feel like they are going to roll off?

When I sit near the edge of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, the memory foam and Adaptive Foam collapse only a bit. Also, the pocketed coils do not really collapse because they have a reinforced edge. This means the coils are actually firmer toward the edge of the mattress. That design also makes me feel very secure when I am lying down near the edge of the Hybrid.

Marten’s Take

Personally, I find the Tuft & Needle Hybrid to be a great match for back sleeping and side sleeping. However, this is my experience, and the Hybrid might not feel the same other sleepers, namely larger sleepers. That is why I asked Marten, a heavier member of our team, to come in and try out the Tuft & Needle Hybrid for himself. Here is what he thought:

So, Joe is 5’9” and weighs 160 lbs, and I am 6’7” and weigh 230 lbs. I am significantly larger than Joe and this often affects how I experience a mattress. My weight causes me to sink further into most mattresses, causing me to experience some more firmness than Joe did.

The Tuft & Needle is no exception and, while Joe thought it was a 6/10 in terms of firmness, I thought it was closer to a 6.5/10. Again, I am pressing into the mattress and feeling the firmness of the coils.

All that being said, I felt the same balance of comfort and support that Joe spoke of. Lying on my back, the Hybrid is firm enough to hold up my body and soft enough to contour and let my hips sink in.

Even with my heavier weight, the Hybrid is still a good match for me when I am side sleeping. That comfort layer is thick enough to relieve pressure on my shoulders and hips. I will note that those who are much larger than me (closer to 300 lbs) are probably going to feel some more firmness in those areas.

However, moving to my stomach, I am feeling even less support than Joe felt. The memory foam and Adaptive Foam are letting my hips sink in too far.

So, while heavier back and side sleepers should like the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, heavier stomach sleepers should find something more supportive.

Unboxing The Tuft & Needle Hybrid

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, so it will arrive in a large cardboard box. The first thing to do is transport the mattress inside with the help of a friend. Trust me, this is a heavier mattress, and it’s not worth pulling a muscle.

Once the Hybrid is in the bedroom, take the rolled-up mattress out of the box and position it on the frame or foundation. Then, cut through the plastic layers one by one without damaging the mattress.

Finally, clear away the packing materials, and the mattress should be all set. I would give the mattress a few days to off-gas and for the memory foam to fully expand.

What Makes The Tuft & Needle Hybrid Stand Out?

  • The Hybrid is the most advanced mattress from Tuft & Needle.
  • This mattress features a fantastic balance of comfort and support.
  • The combination of cooling infusions should keep the Hybrid from sleeping too hot.
  • The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is very supportive and should be a good match for heavier sleepers.

Overall

The Tuft & Needle Hybrid is indeed an impressive mattress. It is supportive, comfortable, and should be a good match for combo sleepers, side sleepers, and back sleepers. However, those who sleep primarily on their stomachs are going to want to look elsewhere.

The Hybrid comes with free shipping and returns, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10-year warranty. Tuft & Needle offers two other models as well as many other bedding accessories. The Tuft & Needle mattresses are also available in some brick-and-mortar stores as well.
