As a heavier side sleeper and hot sleeper, I often have two issues with memory foam mattress toppers. First, I drop through soft memory foam and rarely feel the best pressure relief. Second, memory foam often causes me to overheat at night.
So, I was very excited to try out the Saatva Mattress Topper. They offer a model that features a transition layer as well as graphite-infused memory foam. I was interested to see if it would be a good fit for my sleeping preferences.
Is this a cooler-sleeping mattress topper for side sleepers? Read on for my full review.
The Saatva mattress topper is a comfortable option for back sleepers, side sleepers, and hot sleepers.
You Might Like The Saatva If…
- You are a back sleeper. The Saatva is a great option for those who sleep primarily on their back. The memory foam conforms to the shape of your body and the top layer also presses up into the lumbar area. In addition, the transition layer keeps your hips from sinking in too far. All in all, it is a great match for back sleeping.
- You are a side sleeper. If you sleep primarily on your side, the Saatva should work for you. The topper softens the mattress quite a bit so you should feel improved pressure relief on your shoulders and hips. Also, the transition layer keeps you from bottoming out. Even heavier side sleepers should find this mattress topper to be a good fit.
- You sleep hot. A major drawback of memory foam is that it can trap heat. While it does contain memory foam, it did not sleep hot for me. The graphite in the memory foam helps with cooling and dissipates heat. Also, the cover is breathable and allows for some air to flow through the topper. It won’t necessarily cool you while you sleep, but it shouldn’t have you sleeping hotter.
You Might Not Like The Saatva If…
- You don’t like the memory foam feel. If you aren’t a fan of slower-moving memory foam with that sinking feel, this Saatva topper might not be the best choice for you. Saatva also offers a thinner, high-density foam topper as well as a latex topper. You might want to consider one of those if you don’t like that slow, sinking feeling.
- You are worried about getting stuck in your mattress. While the Saatva isn’t the least responsive memory foam mattress topper I have tried, it still makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress. If you already have trouble changing positions at night, this might not be the best option for you. Consider the Saatva latex mattress topper if you want something more responsive.
- You are looking for an affordable mattress topper. When you consider the quality of the Saatva mattress topper, it really is a good value. However, you do have to spend some money up front. There are much more affordable memory foam mattress toppers out there. They might not last as long, but you will save in the short term.
Construction And Options
- The mattress topper is 3″ tall.
- The cover is made of organic cotton. It is soft and very breathable.
- The top layer contains a soft, graphite-infused memory foam. The graphite helps dissipate heat.
- Then you have a layer of transition foam. It is a bit firmer than the top layer. It transitions you from the soft top layer down to your mattress.
- The Saatva includes four anchor straps that help keep the topper secured to your mattress.
- The topper is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.
- Saatva also offers a latex topper as well as a 1.5″ high-density foam model.

My Experience
When I first received the Saatva mattress topper, I took it out of the plastic and lay it on my bed. Memory foam mattress toppers usually have a strong chemical odor when you first unpack them. However, I barely noticed a smell.
In addition, the topper was almost immediately ready for use. I have had to wait much longer for memory foam mattress toppers to expand.
To test out the firmness of the Saatva, I placed it on a mattress with a firmness of 8/10. With the Saatva topper on top, the mattress felt closer to a 6.5/10. The topper really softens the mattress quite a bit.
Lying down on my back, I felt some additional contouring. The memory foam took the shape of my body and even pressed up into my lumbar area. Also, the transition layer didn’t let my hips sink in too far. The Saatva definitely improved the mattress in regards to back sleeping.
Moving to my side, I felt some fantastic pressure relief. The issue I often have with softer memory foam toppers is that I press right through them. No matter how thick they are, I tend to bottom out. However, the transition layer helped stop me from bottoming out. I feel some extra pressure relief without dropping into the mattress.
While most memory foam mattress toppers make it worse for me when I sleep on my stomach, this does not apply to the Saatva. The transition layer prevents my hips from sinking in too far, taking my spine out of alignment. Overall, the topper did not really affect me when stomach sleeping.
The Saatva mattress topper has that soft, slow-moving memory foam feel. However, it does feel a bit different from other memory foam mattress topper in that it has a transition layer as well. The top layer is very soft and quicksandy, but then you get down to a firmer transition layer.
The topper also does a nice job of not trapping heat. The cover is breathable, and the top layer is infused with graphite. While I wasn’t sleeping cold, the Saatva did not add heat to the mattress.
Overall
All in all, the Saatva mattress topper should be a great match for back sleepers, side sleepers, and hot sleepers. Those who don’t like the memory foam feel might want to check out the Saatva latex mattress topper.
The Saatva comes with Free Shipping and a 120-night trial.
