Top Picks Compared

Let’s face it – there really isn’t one perfect mattress that will fit all types of sleepers – that’s why we’ve chosen mattresses with different constructions, feels, and prices!

Good For All Three Sleeping Positions

Casper

One of the main things people should be looking for in a guest room is versatility – that’s what the Casper mattress is all about – it features a zoned construction that makes it an excellent fit for all three sleeping positions. The Casper’s proprietary Zoned Support system can be found in the mattress’s transition layer – the layer is essentially firmer toward the center of the mattress and softer toward the head and foot of the mattress.

Back sleeping on the Casper, sleepers will experience the extra support of the zoned construction under their lumbar area – when they are stomach sleeping, the center zone will prevent their hips from sinking into the mattress – side sleeping on the Casper, people should feel some fantastic pressure relief from the softer shoulder zone.

The Casper features both memory foam and a responsive latex-like foam in its comfort layer – these combine to give the mattress a comfortable, balanced foam feel. It provides suitable comfort and pressure relief but still makes it easy for people to move around, and the foams are open-celled so they do not trap heat and make sleepers uncomfortably warm at night.

So, no matter what position that house guest sleeps in, they should feel supported, comfortable, and cool on the Casper mattress.

What Makes The Casper Stand Out?

  • The mattress features a proprietary Zoned Support system that makes the mattress a exceptional fit for combination sleepers.
  • The Casper features breathable foams, so the mattress should not sleep extremely hot.
  • The mattress boasts a nice balanced foam feel, so sleepers should never feel stuck and should find it easy to move around on the Casper.

Best Innerspring Mattress

Saatva

Some people just aren’t the biggest fans of foam mattresses – they might not like the feel or they could simply be used to sleeping on a traditional innerspring mattress. To offer guests something a bit more classic, we wanted to offer up the Saatva mattress as an option; the Saatva is an innerspring mattress that contains two layers of coils (support coils and micro-coils) and a soft Euro-style pillow top.

This construction provides the mattress with a balance of comfort and support that should work for many different types of sleepers. Back sleepers should feel their hips sink into the pillow top comfort layer while the micro-coils conform to the body and the other layer of coils offer support; there is also a thin memory foam layer that will provide additional lumbar support. Side sleepers should also get excellent pressure relief from the pillow top, and stomach sleepers should also receive the necessary support.

Lying on the Saatva, people will feel like they are sleeping on top of the mattress rather than in it – again, this is more of a traditional feel that guests might have experienced in a hotel room – the Saatva really could be a classic addition to any guest room!

What Makes The Saatva Stand Out?

  • The mattress features a balance of comfort and support that should work for the majority of combination sleepers.
  • The Saatva boasts two layers of coils that provide excellent contouring and support.
  • The mattress has a more traditional innerspring mattress feel similar to what one would find in a nice hotel.
  • The two sets of coils leave a lot of room for airflow so the Saatva should not sleep particularly hot.

Best For Lightweight Guests

Tuft And Needle

Those aunts and uncles, grandpas and grandmas out there should pay attention – the Tuft and Needle mattress is going to be a great match for those nephews, nieces, and grandkids. The Tuft and Needle is a streamlined mattress with only two layers – the top layer is 3″ of proprietary Adaptive Foam, and the support layer is 7″ of base polyfoam.

While the construction is particularly simple, the Tuft and Needle should be a fantastic fit for lighter people who sleep in pretty much any position. Lightweight back sleepers should get a balance of comfort and support from the medium-firm mattress and lightweight side sleepers should get some nice pressure relief from the Adaptive Foam. The Tuft and Needle mattress could even be supportive enough for some lighter stomach sleepers.

The Tuft and Needle is also an exceptional value – a Queen size mattress is currently available for less than $600 – that is a very good deal for such a high-quality mattress. No one wants to spend too much on a guest room mattress, and this should be a good value pick for those younger visitors.

What Makes The Tuft And Needle Stand Out?

  • The mattress features a streamlined design that should work for children, teenagers, and lightweight adults.
  • The Tuft and Needle has a firmness of 6.5/10 and should be a good fit for all three sleeping positions.
  • The mattress’s Adaptive Foam is more responsive and breathable than standard memory foam.
  • The Tuft and Needle is a high-quality guest room option sold for a value price.

That is why I added the Bear Hybrid to this list – it is a luxury hybrid mattress that should make guests feel like they are truly sleeping in style.

The Bear Hybrid contains individually-wrapped coils, premium comfort foam on top, and a Celliant cover – these are all high-end materials that provide the mattress with a luxury look and feel. What’s more, the Celliant cover has been shown to improve blood flow and speed up recovery for athletes and active people. It is also a cooling material, so guests should not be sleeping extremely hot.

The mattress’s hybrid construction provides the mattress with an excellent balance of comfort and support and, like most of the other mattresses on this list, the Bear Hybrid is medium-firm, making it a good fit for multiple sleeping positions. Back sleepers and side sleepers should especially find the Bear Hybrid to be a good match – the coils are quite supportive and the premium comfort foam provides excellent pressure relief.

So, those who have a bit more money to spend on their guests and want a high-quality, luxury mattress should take a look at the Bear Hybrid!

Best Value

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery

Luxury is great and all, but some people are looking for the best deal possible on a guest room mattress – when it comes to great values, Brooklyn Bedding is hard to beat – the company owns its own factory, so all of the Brooklyn Bedding mattresses are priced competitively. Their most affordable mattress option is the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery, a streamlined, all-foam mattress.

The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery consists of three foam layers – a comfort layer, a transition layer, and a base layer – the comfort layer contains Energex foam, a bouncier and more breathable alternative to memory foam – guests shouldn’t feel like they are getting stuck in the mattress, and they shouldn’t be sleeping particularly hot.

The Bowery is going to be an excellent fit for lightweight sleepers such as teenagers and children – lighter side sleepers should experience some exceptional pressure relief on the Bowery – this mattress is a great value mattress that should work for younger house guests.

What Makes The Bowery Stand Out?

  • The Bowery is a great value – it is only priced at around $700 for a Queen size mattress.
  • The mattress should be a great fit for lightweight side sleepers.
  • Guests should not complain about getting stuck or sleeping hot on the Bowery.

Best Memory Foam

Nectar

Today, many people are fans of memory foam mattresses – this type of material offers great pressure relief, contouring, and an overall comfortable feel – those who think a memory foam mattress would be a good match for their guests should consider the Nectar.

The Nectar features 3″ of gel memory foam over a transition layer and base layer – the mattress exhibits that slow-moving feel that many expect from a memory foam mattress. Lying on the Nectar, house guests should feel themselves slowly sink into the mattress and feel it conform to the body.

The 3″ of soft memory foam makes the Nectar a very good match for side sleepers; guests should feel almost no pressure on their shoulders and hips when they are side sleeping. At the same time, they should be able to switch to their back and get some good support and contouring.

Finally, the Nectar is quite affordable for a memory foam mattress; a Queen size is currently around $800.

What Makes The Nectar Stand Out?

  • The Nectar boasts a classic memory foam feel that lets sleepers slowly sink into the mattress.
  • The mattress should offer great pressure relief for side sleepers and good support for back sleepers.
  • The memory foam is infused with gel to keep the mattress from trapping too much heat.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

If someone is looking for a mattress for their guest room, they should consider the size of their guests. For instance, if they have a larger family member who comes to visit quite often, they should make sure that the mattress can support the additional weight. Because of this, I asked Marten, who weighs 250 lbs, to try out these six mattresses and recommend which if any would be a good match for a heavier house guest like him.

Out of these six mattresses, four should be a decent match for someone of my size. First off, the Casper’s zoned construction makes it a good match for pretty much any sleeping position. I feel particularly excellent support when I am on my back and good pressure relief when I am side sleeping; while it is a bit soft for stomach sleeping, I don’t feel like my hips are bowing into the mattress too much.

The Saatva mattress features coils, a feature that many larger sleepers require – coils can usually handle more weight than a base polyfoam – the two layers of coils offer me enough support for back sleeping and the pillow top provides me with some excellent pressure relief for side sleeping.

While the Nectar does not contain coils, I do feel satisfactory support when I am back sleeping; I sink into the soft memory foam and feel it conform to the shape of my body, and I also feel some exceptional pressure relief when I am side sleeping.

The Bear Hybrid features both coils and pressure-relieving comfort foam, so the mattress is supportive enough for me when I am back sleeping and soft enough for side sleeping.

How To Find The Best Mattress For A Guest Room

If someone is looking for a mattress for a guest room, there are a few things they should be considering – think about the following while mattress shopping, and it shouldn’t be difficult to choose!

  • Find a medium-firm mattress. It is important to find a mattress that will work for a wide variety of sleepers. A firm mattress might be good for some people, but what if a guest likes something softer? That is why it’s a good idea to choose a mattress that is close to medium-firm – a medium-firm mattress will be an excellent match for multiple sleeping positions, and most guests should find enough comfort and support.
  • Seek out a good value mattress. Mattresses are an investment; if one has already spent a significant amount of money on their own mattress, they don’t want to break the bank on a high priced guest room mattress. They should find a mattress with quality components that aren’t accompanied by a ridiculous price tag – customers should also attempt to buy a guest room mattress around holidays like the Fourth of July or Memorial Day when many mattress companies offer some pretty fantastic deals on their products.
  • Consider the preferences of guests who visit often. If one’s in-laws come to visit often, it might be an excellent idea to choose a mattress that will work for them. If they are stomach sleepers a firm mattress might be a better choice or, if they are side sleepers, a soft mattress might be more ideal.
  • Cooling properties. Sleeping hot is an issue that many people deal with, and it is smart to find a mattress with cooling properties so that house guests aren’t overheating at night – memory foam mattresses are known for sleeping hot, but many now contain gel, graphite, or some other cooling materials – spring or hybrid mattresses are usually the best with cooling because the coils promote airflow throughout the mattress.

Final Thoughts

One of these six mattresses should help any guest have a great night’s sleep. Those who want to keep looking should just make sure to find a mattress that is a good fit for multiple sleeping positions and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg!

FAQs

What type of mattress is best for a guest room?

Any type of mattress can work in a guest room, from a traditional innerspring mattress to an all-foam mattress. The type of mattress is not the most important consideration – it is more about finding a mattress that will work a variety of people. Those who need a mattress for a guest room should choose something medium-firm that exhibits a balance of comfort and support; this should make it an exceptional fit for guests who sleep in any position.

What type of mattresses do hotels use?

While it does depend on the hotel, the majority of hotels have some type of innerspring mattress with a pillow top. Most of these mattresses will be close to medium-firm so that they will work for hotel guests who sleep on their back, side, or stomach. An excellent example of this type of mattress is the Saatva, which has two sets of coils and a Euro-style pillow top.

What is the best cheap mattress for a guest room?

People who need a cheap mattress for their guest room have a few options – if they want something with coils that provides good support, the Allswell could be an excellent choice. If they are seeking something with more of that memory foam feel, they should take a look at one of the Zinus mattresses.
